If i had only Listened…

Sometimes if we can only stop and listen for a while, God will reveal something to us that we didn’t have a chance of finding out on our own.  Sometimes we find a calling, sometimes he is answering prayers; sometimes he just reveals a bit of his will, or even give us affirmation.

This story, however, is a simple story of the almost missed miracles, the everyday miracles that we so easily miss.  There are miracles happening all around us, all of the time.  All we have to do is stop and listen, stop and watch for God to move.

When I started this expirament in spirituality, I decided that the first portion of my day would be given to God as a time to study his word.  The other day, I was studying the last part of Isaiah 40, which coincidentally I thought might be of use to a very good friend of mine.  So, I sent her the verse in question and went on with my day, not thinking much of it.

Another part of this experiment was supposed to start on the next day.  I decided that I was going to go on a fast; I would give up games and other of my common pleasures in an effort to seek out new ways to spend my free time that were pleasing to God.  So, when midnight rolled around on Saturday, I had a dilemma; should I play a game or two before I go to bed, or should I start my fast at midnight on Sunday morning?

Ultimately I decided that I would be best to go ahead and start.  I sent a message to my friend to see if she was awake, then I got ready for bed.

Then she messaged me.  We talked for a bit and I asked her about the verse that I sent her earlier in the day; she said that it had been a great help to her.  So, I started thinking about that.   Wheels started turning in my head as I began to realize that God had been moving in mysterious ways to bring things about.

When I had woken up on Saturday morning, it was 6:30.  Normally, on Saturdays when I wake up any time before 10:00am, it is an unfortunate event.  However, with these recent changes in my life, I decided to look at it like an opportunity.  So, I went ahead and got up to do my bible study and sent her the message as part of that.  She was able to receive the message as soon as she woke, which was a blessing to her.  I thought about that and quickly realized that God had his hand in waking me up early on a Saturday so that I could deliver that verse to her.   Then I started thinking about the other things that God had moved in, and it was clear that the very fact that I was making this realization was because I had decided not to play games, but to be more aware and listen for Him to move.  It was such a blessing; it became immediately clear to me that what I had decided to do was very important.  If God can reveal so much in just the first hour of focusing on Him, what will he reveal in a lifetime of focus?

Needless to say, that has become a major source of encouragement as I continue down this path that I have chosen.  Therefore, I encourage you to stop what you’re doing for a while and open yourself up to the possibility that God is working in you and through you at every minute.  You’ll be amazed at what you find when you get rid of some background noise.
